Republican Sen. Mark Scheffel is making political waves as his Business Personal Property Tax bill, a proposal to phase out the tax on businesses, passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on a bipartisan vote. Serving his first term in the State Senate, one of Sen. Scheffel’s primary goals is to help Coloradans prosper through the creation of jobs. To this end, Sen. Scheffel has the honor of serving on the Job Creation and Economic Growth Committee. In addition he is a member of the Finance, Education, Business, Labor and Technology and Legislative Council committees.

Scheffel’s family has a long history of political activism in the Republican Party – his mother served as Chairman of the Douglas County GOP four years prior to Scheffel stepping up to the challenge. After serving as two term chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party, Scheffel was elected to represent Senate District 4 in November 2008 with nearly 70 percent of the vote. His district encompasses Southern Douglas, Northern El Paso, Teller, Lake and Park counties.

Scheffel is committed to the principles of individual freedom and limited government, and like so many other small business owners, he is frustrated with the unprecedented growth of state government. He is the owner of Reid and Scheffel, a law firm specializing in tax and business representation, and estate planning. He also serves on the board of the Wildlife Experience, an interactive museum located in Douglas County that focuses on conserving the world’s wildlife and ecosystems. In addition, he is a board member of the Skycliff Stroke Center, an organization that assists families of stroke victims. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Denver University, Senator Scheffel earned a J.D. from the John Marshall Law School and then proceeded to earn an L.L.M. in Taxation from the New York University School of Law. When not working or serving in the legislature, Scheffel enjoys spending time with his family and coaching baseball. Sen. Scheffel and his wife Cheri have four children. They live in Douglas County.
